THE INCENSE ALTAR

THE INCENSE ALTAR
Let my prayer be set forth before thee [as] incense; [and] the lifting up of my hands [as] the evening sacrifice.– Psalms 141:2 (KJV)
In the Old Testament, one of the pieces of furniture in the Temple was the Incense Altar. It was inside the Holy Place just in front of the veil that led into the Holy of Holies.

“And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of the saints.” -Revelation 5:8

Notice the incense isn’t just prayers, it’s communion made by and through Jesus Christ! That incense altar represents our intimacy with The Lord. When we spend time with Him, He sees it as a sweet incense in His presence! Lets look at the symbolism in the incense altar and what it teaches us about our lives.

1.PURCHASED BY BLOOD
EXODUS 30:10 (KJV)-“And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it [is] most holy unto the LORD.”
Just like all the elements of worship in the Temple, the Incense Altar had to be purchased by blood. The only prayers that God accepts are those made by & through the blood. Even the fire came from a brazen altar where the blood sacrifice was made. The Lord is a jealous God and He is jealous over his pattern & order. It is the blood of Jesus that our eternal salvation rests upon!

2. PLEASING TO THE LORD –“SWEET SAVOUR”
Exodus 30:7 –“And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.”
2 Corinthians 2:15 –“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:”
The outer court – Brazen altar/laver represents the flesh and the earthly ministry of Jesus.
The “Holy Place” – represents the Heavenly ministry of Jesus. It’s also a refreshing scent in light of so much flesh.
He’s sick of smelling our flesh! He desires the incense of a pure and holy vessel!

3. PERPETUAL
Exodus 30:8 – “And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.”
The bible says we are to pray without ceasing. In Ephesians 6:18 it says “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

4. PURE
We are to stand pure and holy before the Lord.
Exodus 30:34-35 – “And the LORD said unto Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:”
Matthew 5:8 – “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

5. POUNDED
Exodus 30:36- “And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.”
Psalms 51:17- “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

CONCLUSION:
The incense altar has to do with the process and preparation of a true life of intimacy with The Lord . Is our life a sweet fragrance unto The Lord?
