“Salvation never finds its way into a prayer-less heart. The Holy Spirit never abides in a prayer-less spirit. Preaching never edifies a prayer-less soul. Christ knows nothing of prayer-less Christians. The gospel cannot be projected by a prayer-less preacher” – E.M. Bounds Power Through Prayer
In part one of this series I dealt with the fact that prayer grants us Access to the Almighty. (Click here to read part 1) Now, I would like to point your attention to the second fact you need to know about prayer:
#2 UNDERSTANDING THE ALMIGHTY
Prayer is communication. Simply put, it’s our communication with our Lord – Jesus Christ. The more we communicate with someone the more we learn about them. Their likes and dislikes, etc.
As Christians, we say we know God, but how well? We try to rationalize what God is thinking and what He is like. The problem with that is it creates an image of God that’s not accurate. One of the greatest forms of idolatry is attempting to create an image of God that is conceived in our own minds. We are finite – God is infinite. It’s impossible for us to create an image or understanding of what God is like!
Isa 55:8-9 KJV
8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
The only remedy for this problem is for God Himself to reveal who He is to us. This comes through prayer and God’s Word.
GOD WANTS TO BE KNOWN
Did you know that God wants you to know Him? He has worked throughout the ages to reveal Himself to man. This desire was fully culminated in Jesus Christ who came to this earth to become Emmanuel – God With Us!
DO YOU KNOW HIS WAYS?
It’s one thing to say you know God, but can you say you know His ways? Moses prayed:
“Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew
me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy
sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.” Exodus 33:13 (emphasis mine)
Psalms 95:10 & Hebrews. 3:10 tells us:
“Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is
a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: ” (emphasis mine)
The closer we become involved with someone, the more we learn their ways. We can anticipate their thoughts, their moves, and what they desire. The more we learn God’s ways, the more fully we are able to obey him. This is one of the miracles of prayer. Getting to know the ways of God. As we pray, He can lead us and speak to us about what He desires.
I do not want to simply know something about God. I want to know HIM!
