We talk a great deal about waiting on the Lord when we need something or want to see something happen. We share our struggles with one another about how we need patience, etc. But have you ever considered the possibility that God may be waiting on us? I found a few occurrences in Scripture where Jesus is found waiting.
I. WAITING ON US – PRAYER CLOSET
And he must needs go through Samaria.
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with [his] journey, sat thus on the well: [and] it was about the sixth hour.
There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
II. WAITING ON THE HARVEST
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
III. WAITING ON THE FATHER’S SIGNAL TO RETURN
But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.
20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you all. Amen.
Sounds like an invitation to me. Is the Lord waiting on our obedience today? How many days have we left Him waiting for us in our secret time of prayer? How long has He waited to reveal the deeper truths of His Word while our Bibles lay motionless? Don’t leave Jesus waiting today. Go to Him; call upon Him; seek Him!
