I’VE LEARNED, I KNOW, I CAN

Philippians 4:11-13
11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, [therewith] to be content.
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Notice the progression: I’ve Learned – I Know – I Can. This is an important order. There is a great danger in DOING before BEING!

    #1 I’VE LEARNED

Paul here is speaking of more than “book learning”. “I’ve learned…” is the voice of hard gained experience. You rarely hear someone fresh out of college or some certain training using this phrase. They may say things like, “they taught us to…” or, “we studied… .” Because in reality, you haven’t learned a thing until you’ve experienced it. This goes especially for serving Christ. You can teach someone about Christ but that doesn’t mean they’ve experienced Him.

Ephesians 4:20 (KJV)
But ye have not so learned Christ;

Philippians 4:9 (KJV)
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Even Jesus Himself learned by experience!

Hebrews 5:8 (KJV)
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    #2 I KNOW

How many things do you honestly know for sure? We think many times we know something but do we really? Paul could say from experience that he knew something. He knew His Savior!

2 Timothy 1:12 (KJV)
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

The blind man wasn’t sure about a lot of things, but he did know one thing for sure!

John 9:25 (KJV)
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner [or no], I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

    #3 I CAN

Philippians 4:13 (KJV)
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

There’s no question now – just faith. “I CAN DO…” He learned till he knew that he could. It’s a maturity of our faith. We don’t always understand the why’s but God has us in a special trade school. To learn until we know so that we can do!
