“All roads lead to Rome.” I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase at some point in your life. You might have even used it yourself to describe different methods of reaching a desired goal. It’s a phrase that originated during the Roman Empire to describe the layout of travel in those days. All major roads branched out from the capital city.
This may have been a great description of Rome, but it doesn’t apply to Heaven! I’ve often heard people use this phrase and attempt to apply it to the afterlife. Statements like, “all roads lead to Heaven” or “we’re all serving the same god.” In actuality, this idea could not be farther from the truth. All roads are not the same and neither are the methods of transportation.
We love options. The restaurants we frequent, the places we visit, and even the basic necessities all come with options. Everything from colors and sizes to sights and smells. This luxury though, cannot be applied to eternal things.
While you may get to choose what church you attend or what style music you like, you DO NOT get to choose who God is. And while we all love to see alternatives before making decisions, there are no alternatives here. There is only one way to Heaven!
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:1–6 (KJV 1900) emphasis mine
Why is there only one way? Jesus explained that He was THE WAY. Not A way or SOME way, but THE WAY. Here are 3 reasons Jesus MUST be the only road that leads to Heaven.
#1 IT’S HIS HEAVEN!
I find it somewhat amusing when I hear someone arguing against following Jesus. They become almost angry that someone would dare believe that Jesus Christ is the only way. HELLO! IT’S HIS HEAVEN!
#2 THERE’S ONLY ONE HEAVEN – AND WE’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
NEWS FLASH: there isn’t a different Heaven for each belief or religion. We have somehow come to believe that our opinion is the criteria. We are well trained in the art of self-promotion. Though our self esteem may not be the highest, we certainly wouldn’t ever believe we deserved Hell. So what makes us fit for someone else’s home (Heaven)? Is it because we’re so forgiving of others? Oh, maybe it’s our diligence to always tell the truth? How about our lack of anger or lustful thoughts? No? I didn’t think so. You see, we’re all plagued with this awful condition known as sin. We were born with it and need a remedy outside ourselves.
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23 (KJV 1900)
#3 ONLY JESUS CAN FORGIVE OUR SINS!
In spite of us He loves us! He’s the only One willing to take the weight and guilt of every sin upon His own shoulders. Some would lead you to believe that it’s too narrow to believe in only one way. If there’s:
Only One who loved me enough to come to live in this filthy world
Only One willing to bear my filth upon a criminal’s cross
Only One who could wash my filth away with His own blood and
Only One who promised to let me live in His Heaven forever
Yeah, I’ll go with that!
How about you? How is it with your soul? Have you surrendered everything to Jesus Christ? Have you trusted Him as both Savior AND Lord? If not, you can right now! Trust in Jesus Christ as the only true Savior – ask Him to forgive you of your sins – commit to serve Him faithfully.
