1 TIMOTHY 6:6–12 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
2 TIMOTHY 2:19-22 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 TIMOTHY 4:7-8 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
The Christian life is about the journey from one place to another and the struggles in between. We are always fleeing from something – following something – fighting something – and striving to finish well.
There will always be certain things you need to run from. Things that have no eternal value whatsoever. Things that are set on destroying your faith and life.
Notice the verses above in 1 Timothy 6. Paul uses phrases like, “from such withdraw thyself…flee these things.” He warns us of the love of money, ungodly gain, and foolish & hurtful lusts. He also warns that they can drown men in destruction and perdition. There’s reason to run!
2 TIMOTHY 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
ISAIAH 51:1-6 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, And to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged. 2 Look unto Abraham your father, And unto Sarah that bare you: For I called him alone, And blessed him, and increased him. 3 For the Lord shall comfort Zion: He will comfort all her waste places; And he will make her wilderness like Eden, And her desert like the garden of the Lord; Joy and gladness shall be found therein, Thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. 4 Hearken unto me, my people; And give ear unto me, O my nation: For a law shall proceed from me, And I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people. 5 My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, And mine arms shall judge the people; The isles shall wait upon me, And on mine arm shall they trust. 6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, And look upon the earth beneath: For the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, And the earth shall wax old like a garment, And they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: But my salvation shall be for ever, And my righteousness shall not be abolished.
ROMANS 14:19 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
HEBREWS 12:14 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
It’s not enough just to flee the destructive, we must equally follow the eternal. What are you following? More importantly, WHO are you following? Jesus passed by a rag-tag group of fishermen one day and said, “follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Think about just part of that for a moment. “Follow me and I will make you…” Who are you following? This is more than a Twitter account! This is your eternal life!
JUDE 1-3 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: 2 mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
What would you fight for? Your family? Your home? Most likely, you are willing to fight for that which is most valuable to you. What about your faith? In the scope of things, isn’t our faith in Jesus Christ the most valuable thing we possess?
2 TIMOTHY 4:7 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
You’ve heard it said, “it’s not how you start , but how you finish that matters most.” There is some truth in that. You may have made a mess of your life and feel it doesn’t matter. Please understand, you can still finish well. Allow Jesus Christ to be the Lord of your life and He can turn it all around!
Time is drawing to a close. Are you ready?
Matt. 24:44 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Have you fought the good fight and kept the faith?
1 Corinthians 9:24 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
