“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
Did you catch that? Did you see the three crosses in this verse?
#1 – The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ
#2 – The cross upon where the world is crucified to me
#3 – The cross upon where I am crucified
“23And Jesus answered them, saying,The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.”
• NO GLORYING EXCEPT IN THE CROSS
“23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise [man] glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty [man] glory in his might, let not the rich [man] glory in his riches:
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD.”
Take a look now at the 3 crosses as they are “fleshed” out.
“38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
1. THE CROSS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
Jesus is the first-fruits. In the Old Testament, Israel was commanded to give a Wave Offering before The Lord. First, there was the Passover, and the day following was a Sabbath, and the day after that the First-fruits Offering was made. So Christ, our Passover Lamb, was crucified, the day following was the Sabbath, and by day three He was out of the grave! He became the First-fruits Offering that was waved before The Lord!
1COR 15:19-23 (KJV)
“19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.
21 For since by man [came] death, by man [came] also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.”
John 12:32 (KJV)
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me.”
2. THE WORLD IS CRUCIFIED TO ME – The Unrepentant Thief
2 Timothy 4:10 (KJV)
“For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica…”
James 4:4 (KJV)
“4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
1 John 2:15-17 (KJV)
“15 Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
3. I AM CRUCIFIED TO THE WORLD – The Repentant Thief
There are 3 things this repentant thief on the cross believed:
1. FUTURE JUDGMENT – “FEAR GOD”
2. HIS OWN SINFUL STATE – “WE INDEED JUSTLY”
3. LORDSHIP OF CHRIST – “WHEN THOU COMEST…”
This thief was the last earthly companion Jesus had, but he became the first Heavenly companion! “Today you shall be with me…”
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
The same cross that connects us to God disconnects us from this world! We cannot simply receive the benefits of the cross without walking in the rejection it brings!
